HeartMath Training: Coherence for Healing A 4-Session Introductory Series with Dr. Bonnie Juul, Certified HeartMath Practitioner Your heart is more than a pump. It sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart, and the rhythm of those signals shapes how you think, feel, and heal. The HeartMath Institute has spent more than 30 years studying this heart–brain connection. A central finding of that work is the power of coherence.

What Is Coherence? Coherence is a measurable state where your heart rhythm becomes smooth and ordered, and your heart, brain, nervous system, and breathing begin working together in sync. In this state, the body shifts out of “fight, flight or freeze” and into a mode that supports repair, recovery, and clear thinking.

HeartMath research links coherence to better emotional balance, improved resilience to stress, and healthier nervous system function.

Why Coherence Matters for Chronic Conditions When you live with a chronic condition, your body often stays stuck in stress mode. Stress hormones rise, inflammation is fueled, sleep suffers, and healing slows down. Learning to move into coherence on purpose gives your body the internal environment it needs to do what it was designed to do: heal.

This idea is supported by work outside HeartMath as well. Dr. Joe Dispenza, working with HeartMath researchers, has measured heart coherence in thousands of participants at his advanced workshops. His work shows that people can learn to sustain elevated, coherent heart states and that many report meaningful changes in their health as a result.

Dr. William Bengston’s research on the Bengston Method of energy healing also points to the body’s remarkable capacity to respond to focused, intentional energy. Together, this body of work suggests that the state of your heart and mind plays a real role in your physical healing.
